A Photo series of the first year coat transition
Puppy uglies is what others may refer to as “monkey face” or the “scriggly scraggly stage.” All of these are silly names that refer to the hormonal cause of hair loss that happens in the teenage stage of a Pomeranian maturing into adulthood. It’s good to note that other long hair spitz related canine breeds do it as well. Both male and female puppies experience this around the 10-16 week age, but it really varies from puppy to puppy much like hormone display does with our human children– some get one or two pimples while others get more.. and some are lucky enough to get none.
I’d say, in my experience, 1 in 50 Poms doesn’t go through a noticeable blowing of the coat. Those are rare though. Most people don’t really notice it happening until they look back at photos and realize, “Hey, my pup lost its fluff!” Not to worry, they get the fluff back. By 9 months they look like Poms again and you can stop worrying you were duped with a half-breed Chihuahua. 🙂 By age 2, your Pom will have SO MUCH fluff that the chest area will rival the mane of the king of the jungle. I’ve attached a few photos to show how our retired male, Sergeant, went through blow out during his first two years of life.
